Chose this as my "cultural getaway" in Honolulu and I'm glad I made the stop. A bit expensive, but worth the price. The main exposition contains absolutely beautiful artefacts and the building is splendid. Coming out of this museum I have a better understanding of not only Hawaiian but generally Polynesian cultures pre-USA, and the impact colonisation has had on these peoples. Other expos were fun too, especially the interactive/scientific one for kids.
We love reading about Hawaii's history. The exhibits are informative and interesting. The current brick exhibit is very impressive! Lunch....planetarium show....it was all amazing.
Great Experience—If You Know the Hacks! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you are planning a visit to the Bishop Museum, you definitely want to buy your tickets online. Just by using the discount provided on their website, you save 20% right off the bat. Pro-Tip on Pricing: If you are a local resident or military, there is an additional discount available. I only ended up paying $20 for the day, which is an absolute steal for the amount of history here. The "Main Event" One thing to keep in mind is that there really is only one main event building that serves as the heart of the museum. It spans three levels, and if you actually take the time to read everything, it is informative and well-organized. The building itself is a work of art—the woodmanship and craftsmanship of the interior are genuinely impressive and worth the price of admission alone. For the Keiki (Kids) The rest of the campus feels a bit more catered to children. During my visit, they had: A Lego Area: Great for kids to get hands-on. Interactive Aquarium: More of a kid-friendly interactive exhibit rather than a full-scale aquarium building. Final Verdict: Go in with the mindset of focusing on the main museum building. If you appreciate fine art and deep history, you’ll find rewarding. Definitely worth a stop while you're on Oahu!
Absolutely incredible and SO worth it. I found this via Reddit recommendations if you wanted to learn about the local culture. All the exhibits are excellent and we got to see the Aloha Tiles exhibit which was magnificent and “10 stars” according to my Lego-obsessed child. All the permanent displays are wonderfully put together, the interactive elements are fun and I could have easily spent two days at the museum. Definitely watch a planetarium show as it’s a neat small space and we learned a lot about wayfinding. I’m sure all the shows are great. Could not recommend the Bishop Museum more.
Largest collection of Pacific Island heritage artifacts in the world this is a great place to learn and understand the Hawaiian culture. With visiting exhibitions, great speakers, a planetarium, special events and more you definitely will get the most bang for your buck with a membership. Especially since it includes parking!!
