I had one of the most traumatic experiences of my life at this hospital during the birth of my daughter. I arrived at the hospital around 1:00 AM in severe labor pain. I was eventually moved to a labor and delivery room about seven hours later, but I continued to endure hours of intense pain until my daughter was born around 6:00 PM. I was exhausted, scared, and extremely vulnerable, yet I felt that I was treated without the compassion and dignity that every woman deserves during childbirth. One of the most upsetting moments happened when a nurse asked me if I wanted a wheelchair to be taken to the labor room. I was in severe pain and said yes. Instead of helping me, she responded sarcastically: “Then walk for it.” I will never forget how humiliating and heartless that felt while I was struggling through labor. Another nurse made a comment that was extremely hurtful and inappropriate. She questioned why I was in so much pain and said words to the effect of: “Why are you in this much pain? Why did you open your legs if you can’t handle the pain?” Hearing this while I was in labor was deeply upsetting and made me feel judged and disrespected during one of the most difficult moments of my life. The nurse who had the biggest negative impact on my experience was Sheba, who I was told was from Philadelphia. I felt that her behavior changed depending on whether the doctor was present. When the doctor was in the room, she appeared kind and professional. However, when the doctor was not there, I experienced what I felt was cold, dismissive, and disrespectful treatment. I felt ignored and unsupported when I needed care and empathy the most. After giving birth, I experienced complications, and I felt that my concerns were not adequately addressed. Instead of leaving the hospital with joyful memories of my daughter’s birth, I left with emotional trauma from the way I was treated. Childbirth is a life-changing experience, and every mother deserves to feel safe, respected, and cared for. I hope this hospital takes patient experiences seriously, reviews the behavior of its staff, and works to ensure that no other woman goes through what I experienced.
DO NOT EVER GO HERE, FOR ANY REASON. There is something incredibly illegal going on at this hospital. The only listed billing phone # is a fake. I have called and called and called since MARCH because they owe me nearly $2700. Not ONCE has anyone answered the phone, not once have they returned my many voicemails. I have also faxed and emailed dozens of times. Absolutely no one will respond to me. Even my insurance company, BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, cannot get in touch with anyone in billing. I sent BCBS an official recoupment letter months ago explaining the situation, and BCBS has recently informed me that they are unable to get in touch with anyone either, despite them calling around the clock, different times throughout the day and night, trying to get someone to answer. BCBS has advised me that it is time to take the hospital to small claims court. They also committed a serious HIPPA violation regarding the surgery I had there. This business NEEDS to be investigated as there is major illegal activity going on. I have also submitted official complaints with the BBB and Texas Health & Human Services. What I have described so far only barely scratches the surface of what I have gone through with this hospital. When I submitted the complaint to the BBB, I responded that I would happily discuss my story and all evidence with an interviewer with a news station. If no progress is made within the next month, I will be taking them to small claims court.
MY EXPERIENCE WAS TERRIBLE! I went into surgery with Dr Paul J. James, M.D., F.A.C.S. for a belly button hernia. Day of surgery: April 09, 2026 When I first met with Dr Paul James, I was told for my belly button hernia I was going to get clued up no stitches and a mesh would be placed to cover the hole. The day of surgery once again I was told by Dr Paul James and the nurses the sam thing no stitches and I’m getting glued up with the mesh. I get out of surgery I didn't get explained anything. I wasn't told how to take care of the wound. After a week I took off the bandage and I found that there was a piece of wire sticking out of my belly button. Weeks past and it was still there, I decided to follow up with Dr Paul James. When I went he told me that he decided to not use the mesh and decided to use stitches, but stitches that were placed inside me not on the outside of my belly button. He didn't want to give a reason why the game plan changed and why I wasn't told. I have called Dr Paul James' office 5 times and still haven't gotten explained why he changed the original plan I was told for surgery which was no stitches and I’m getting glued up with mesh covering the hole. Almost 2 months later and I still don't have an answer. The day of surgery I told the nurses that I am scared of needles. Most of the time after making that statement the nurses are more focus on me being calm and relax because they know this situation stresses me out. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case at this hospital. The anesthesiologist thought it was funny to pretend that he was going to put a needle into my neck to put me to sleep before surgery. I will say I truly didn't appreciate that, it made me feel very uncomfortable. While he kept doing it and pretending to put the needle in my neck, I told him to stop multiple times. Overall my experience was terrible.
St. Joes has what matters most. Cleanliness, expert staff, and kindness towards everyone. I find it amazing that even though it serves a very poor population, it has high leapfrog scores ( as high as places like Mem Hermann) which measure things like infection rates etc. I highly recommend the care here! Certainly a hidden gem in Houston.
St. Joseph Hospital consistently delivers exceptional care. The case managers and entire CM team are highly organized, responsive, and truly dedicated to ensuring patients and families feel supported every step of the way. The floor nurses are equally outstanding, attentive, compassionate, and always focused on providing comfort and quality care. Their professionalism and kindness do not go unnoticed. A highly recommended hospital for anyone seeking a team that genuinely prioritizes patient well-being.
